Surratt Beauty Artistique Blush

Read Reviews View Swatches

The Artistique Blush formula is supposed to have a “naturally glowing finish.” The formula is consistent: the blushes have a very soft, almost cream-like powder texture that blends out effortlessly to a luminous sheen with semi-opaque to opaque coverage (but is soft and blendable enough to be applied sheer if preferred). Most shades lasted between eight and nine hours on me.

The only downside is that the packaging will feel underwhelming for the price point, as they are sold as refill pans with very thin plastic coverings and are designed to be housed in the brand's freestyle palettes.

Hourglass Confession Ultra Slim High Intensity Lipstick

Read Reviews View Swatches

The formula is supposed to have "creamy, saturated, longwearing color with a satin finish." It's a light-medium thick formula that was typically opaque with a lightly creamy texture that glided on without tugging but did not slide around while worn. The majority of shades had a natural to satin finish, and they lasted anywhere from four to seven hours with light hydration. The best performing shades were light to dark while the lightest and deepest shades weren't quite as consistent.

The lipstick can be purchased with the full packaging/applicator for $34 or as a refill-only for $22. The refill packaging is substantial enough that it is usable on its own, as there's a detachable base that the refillable cap clicks onto (with an audible click), but they are very slim--and that's not a surprise given they only contain 0.03 oz. making them one of the smaller lipsticks on the market. Slim lipsticks typically contain around 0.07 oz. of product and are usually smaller than the average standard lipstick tube (which tends to be between 0.10 and 0.12 oz.).

Hourglass GIRL Lip Stylo

Read Reviews View Swatches

The GIRL Lip Stylo formula is supposed to have “modern color with luxurious hydration for a lustrous finish,” while the brand founder is quoted (on Sephora) stating, “I can build as much–or as little–color as I like.” I would describe the coverage semi-opaque and buildable, which seemed to fit the brand’s description. The consistency was smooth, creamy, and lightweight, but the color still adhered well to the lips (three to five hours, depending on the shade).

I definitely felt like I could apply a little here, a little there, and then spread the color out by pressing my lips together for sheerer coverage, or I could apply a single layer and get semi-opaque coverage fairly easily. The formula was incredibly comfortable to wear: lightweight, hydrating, and smoothing. Some balm-like formulas that have more coverage can sit in lip lines, but I felt like these filled them and made them look softer. I didn’t notice any scent or taste.

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder

Read Reviews View Swatches

The Ambient Lighting Powders breathe life back into the skin after you’ve applied foundations and setting powders–especially if you have more mattifying base products on. They’re not full-on highlighters, but they’re not exactly setting powders (by Hourglass’ definition, they are finishing powders).

If you have very oily skin, you may still need your usual setting powder, but for my normal-to-dry skin, the Ambient Lighting Powders work as a setting and finishing powder in one for me. I get extended wear out of my base products, but the powders also smooths the skin’s appearance, minimizes pores and imperfections, and gives the skin a natural luminosity (not shiny, not shimmery). It is that something extra that someone won’t see and go, “Oh, nice lipstick!” but “Did you do something different with your skin?” When people start asking you about your skincare routine, that’s when you know a product is really delivering on its promises!

The only negative I have to say about the products is that the texture is very, very soft, so depending on the brush you use, excess powder can be kicked up (and wasted).
