NARS Skin Deep Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches

Skin Deep

NARS Skin Deep 12-Pan Eyeshadow Palette ($59.00 for 0.80 oz.) is a new, limited edition neutral-themed palette with six mattes and six shimmers. The shades coordinated well with each other, and while the shimmers were shinier, they weren’t too thick or dense and had finer shimmer, so they layered well with the mattes in the palette. I think those who tend to build up their mattes or tend to use eyeshadow primer will get the most enjoyment out of the formula and performance of the palette.

Taunt

Taunt is a light-medium yellow with warm, orange undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was nearly opaque in a single layer, while the consistency was slightly powdery, so it did sheer out a bit once applied to my skin. The eyeshadow was blendable and went on evenly with seven and a half-hour wear.

Formula Overview

$19.00/0.04 oz. - $475.00 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to have "rich, high-impact color" that is "lightweight" and has "increased blendability." Like most larger ranges, there are winners and losers, and some of how they perform can be related to the type of finish. The mattes are soft, slightly dusty in the pans (or not at all) with medium to opaque, often buildable, color coverage. The satin and metallics tend to be smoother, more blendable, and more pigmented with less effort; NARS does the these lower shimmer finishes particularly well, which just looks "melted" on the skin as they lay down so smoothly and have a great shine.

Most shades applied better on my lid than swatched on my arm, which has been something seen across NARS' eyeshadows for years and didn't change with the recent update to their powder eyeshadow formula. On average, they lasted between seven and nine hours on me without primer. They did apply well over primer and stayed on well for 14 hours with minimal fading.

Worth noting: the updated formula and packaging resulted in a product decrease from 0.07 oz. per pan to 0.04 oz. The single eyeshadows received a more noticeable price drop (from $24 to $19) but the duo eyeshadows could be priced better (from $36 to $35).

Sophia

Sophia is a medium, rosy brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque color coverage in a single layer, which was easily built up to full coverage with a touch more on top. The consistency was soft, smooth, and a little powdery in the pan but did not sheer out too readily nor did it have fallout when I applied it to bare skin. It stayed on nicely for eight hours on me before starting to fade.

Whipped

Whipped is a medium-dark, red-brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had opaque pigmentation with a slightly powdery texture, which resulted in noticeable fallout during application, though the product blended out quite well along the edges. It lasted for just over eight hours on me before I noticed some fading.

Undressed

Undressed is a soft brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good color coverage that was buildable to full coverage with two layers. The eyeshadow had a soft, lightly powdery consistency that blended out easily but didn’t seem prone to fallout. It wore beautifully for seven and a half hours, which was when I started to notice fading.

Bali

Bali is a medium-dark taupe-brown with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque, buildable pigmentation with a very soft, moderately powdery consistency that blended out easily but had noticeable fallout when I worked with it. The color stayed on well for seven and a half hours on me before fading noticeably.

Icon

Icon is a peachy gold with warm undertones and a frosted finish. It had a soft, lightly dusty consistency in the pan, but it blended out nicely and just had a touch of fallout if I wasn’t careful to tap off the excess prior to applying it to my lid. The pigmentation was nearly opaque and could be built up to full coverage with less than half of a layer on top. The eyeshadow lasted well for seven and a half hours on me before I noticed slight fading.

Coconut Grove

Coconut Grove is a blackened brown with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. It had medium, buildable pigmentation with a very smooth, velvety texture, but it did not apply or blend out as easily as I expected (particularly based on the smoothness of the powder). This shade stayed on well for seven and a half hours on me.
