Palette 01

Natasha Denona Palette 01 Eyeshadow Palette 5 ($48.00 for 0.40 oz.) contains four shimmery shades and one matte shade. The current formulation used in the five-pan palettes is much improved compared to formula I tested in 2016. All five shades performed better, while the colors were fairly consistent, though sometimes the shimmer was more standout in the updated formula.

Back story: I purchased all of the 5-pan palettes a few months ago to re-review because if there’s a brand that has a more constant, evolving formula… it is Natasha Denona (the ingredient list is substantially different today compared to the original release and even from a few years ago). I have better experiences with the more updated formulas, so it seemed like a good way to test the current formula as well as get updated swatches. This week, the brand is running buy one, get one free on the 5-pan palettes… so… here we are… frantically reviewing them! Golden Aquamarine (86P)

Golden Aquamarine (86P) is a brighter, mint green with cooler undertones and warmer, golden shimmer throughout. It had nearly opaque pigmentation in a single layer, which applied well to bare skin and blended out easily along the edges. The texture was smooth to the touch, dense and a bit emollient (but more in a velvety way), so it worked better with a moderate brush and/or a flat brush for picking up product. It wore well for eight hours before fading visibly on me.

The updated formula is smoother, slightly more emollient, and the color is deeper, greener.

Navy (01V)

Navy (01V) is a medium-dark blue with subtle, cool undertones and a mostly matte finish. The texture was finely-milled, soft, and a little powdery in the pan, but it adhered evenly to bare skin and blended out well. It had good pigmentation that built up to full coverage with less than half of a layer more. It stayed on well for eight and a half hours before fading noticeably.

The color appeared a bit brighter than the original, but the performance was vastly improved, though I don’t think the matte formula here is as good as the Creamy Matte formula used in newer palettes.

Piggy (80M)

Piggy (80M) is a light pink with strong, warm undertones and a bright, metallic finish. It was intensely pigmented with a smooth, cream-like texture that wasn’t too firmly nor too softly pressed into the pan. It applied well to my lid and blended out with little effort. This shade lasted well for nine hours before fading a bit.

It is a lot more refined with a denser texture that held together better than the original I have, though the color and finish seemed to be nearly identical. It doesn’t have as much creaminess (which I’d expect based on how the formula has changed in terms of ingredients) to the touch–I just didn’t find that mattered for actual application and seemed to improve longevity overall.

Graphite (07M)

Graphite (07M) is a deep gray with cooler undertones and a metallic sheen. It was richly pigmented with a smooth, lightly creamy texture that wasn’t too firmly-pressed into the pan but wasn’t prone to fallout. It applied well to bare skin and blended out with ease. This shade wore nicely for eight and a half hours before fading a bit.

The formula felt a bit less cream-like, but it wore better and was easier to work with, and the shimmer seemed to standout more.

Slate (27M)

Slate (27M) is a medium-dark purple with cooler undertones and a metallic finish. The texture was dense, smooth, and more firmly-pressed into the pan, but it wasn’t stiff or difficult to pick up, just seemed to have a higher-level of binder that ensured fallout was kept to the minimum (or next to none!). The eyeshadow had opaque pigmentation that applied beautifully to bare skin and stayed on well for nine hours before fading visibly.

It was very similar in color but appeared a bit more shimmery/metallic and had better wear time with the current formula, while the texture felt denser but had similar ease in application.
