NARS Afterglow Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches

Afterglow

NARS Afterglow Eyeshadow Palette ($59.00 for 0.48 oz.) is a new, limited edition palette exclusively available at Sephora. It’s a warmer-toned palette that included four matte eyeshadows and eight shimmery shades, though I’d say four were very shimmery/metallic and the remaining four had more of a pearl finish. Most of the shades were pigmented, but the NARS’ formula is thinner and can run a little drier, so it often works better over a primer, which was true of this palette.

First Taste

First Taste is a pale yellow with moderate, warm undertones and a pearly sheen. The texture was moderately powdery with excess product that kicked up in the pan and some fallout when applied and blended, as the color sheered out a bit. It had opaque pigmentation initially, and it was better applied over a primer or with a dampened brush, which helped it to adhere to skin. The color stayed on nicely for seven and a half hours before fading noticeably.

Formula Overview

$19.00/0.04 oz. - $475.00 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to have "rich, high-impact color" that is "lightweight" and has "increased blendability." Like most larger ranges, there are winners and losers, and some of how they perform can be related to the type of finish. The mattes are soft, slightly dusty in the pans (or not at all) with medium to opaque, often buildable, color coverage. The satin and metallics tend to be smoother, more blendable, and more pigmented with less effort; NARS does the these lower shimmer finishes particularly well, which just looks "melted" on the skin as they lay down so smoothly and have a great shine.

Most shades applied better on my lid than swatched on my arm, which has been something seen across NARS' eyeshadows for years and didn't change with the recent update to their powder eyeshadow formula. On average, they lasted between seven and nine hours on me without primer. They did apply well over primer and stayed on well for 14 hours with minimal fading.

Worth noting: the updated formula and packaging resulted in a product decrease from 0.07 oz. per pan to 0.04 oz. The single eyeshadows received a more noticeable price drop (from $24 to $19) but the duo eyeshadows could be priced better (from $36 to $35).

Shadow Hill

Shadow Hill is a light brown with moderate, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had opaque color coverage paired with a soft, lightly powdery texture that wasn’t prone to sheering out nor did it have fallout during application. It wore well for eight hours before fading visibly.

Hot Line

Hot Line is a brighter pop of golden orange with warm undertones and flecks of gold sparkle. The texture was soft, slightly dusty and drier to the touch, but I didn’t have much in the way of fallout during application, though there were a few sparkles that separated from the base color when blended out. It had opaque color payoff that lasted well for eight hours on me.

Whipped

Whipped is a medium-dark brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow had nearly opaque color payoff that was buildable to full coverage with a second layer. The texture felt soft and smooth to the touch with just a hint of powderiness in the pan. It stayed on well for eight hours before I noticed signs of fading.

Crushed

Crushed is a light-medium orange with strong, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation with a soft, lightly powdery texture that was a bit thinner than ideal but it applied without too much effort (I felt like I had to work a little harder to even it out initially). It wore nicely for eight hours before fading visibly.

Mad Love

Mad Love is a light-medium, pink-coral with moderate, warm undertones and a matte finish. It appeared a bit darker and warmer once applied to my skin compared to how it appeared in the pan. The texture was soft, lightly powdery, and somewhat on the thinner side, so it didn’t apply as smoothly to bare skin and looked better over a primer. It lasted well seven and a half hours before I noticed fading.

Formula Overview

$22.00/0.04 oz. - $550.00 Per Ounce

The formula "can be applied dry or with a dampened brush for stronger intensity." It is a very glittery formula, and naturally, it performed significantly better when used with a dampened brush or an adhesive base.

Applied dry, they were typically sheer to semi-sheer with light to moderate fallout when blended out on my lid. They lasted between five and seven hours with light to moderate fallout. Applied wet, they were typically semi-opaque to opaque with minimal fallout when blended out and minimal to slight fallout during wear (about eight hours).

The consistency was soft, slightly drier/chunkier, but they the base colors were blendable and easy enough to use. I did find that they applied decently over primer when applied dry compared to on bare skin.

Push It

Push It is a light-medium, yellowed peach base with flecks of gold and pink sparkle throughout. The texture was more loosely-pressed into the pan and felt drier to the touch, and it seemed to be in the Hardwired formula, which is intended to be a wet/dry formula. Dry application yielded semi-opaque coverage with light fallout, whereas dampened application yielded opaque coverage that went on more smoothly and didn’t have issues with fallout. The color stayed on well for eight hours with slight fallout over time.

Riding High

Riding High is a soft brown with moderate, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. The consistency was slightly dusty in the pan, but it applied evenly and smoothly with full color coverage in a single layer. It wore nicely for eight hours before showing signs of fading.

Bayadere #1

Bayadere #1 is a light-medium, golden copper with warm undertones and a sparkling finish. The texture felt drier and a bit more loosely-pressed into the pan, which resulted in flecks of sparkle separating from the base color making it a messier formula to work with. I’d recommend using this with fingertips or a dampened brush, which yielded smoother, more even and higher coverage without a lot of work. It lasted well for eight hours but had some fallout over time (worn dry).

Trouble

Trouble is a light-medium, peachy coral with strong, warm undertones and a pearly sheen. The eyeshadow had rich color payoff in a single layer, while the texture was smooth, soft, and blendable without being too firmly nor too softly pressed into the pan. It stayed on nicely for eight hours before fading a bit.

Deep Cut

Deep Cut is a deeper fuchsia pink with warmer undertones and a pearly sheen. It had opaque pigmentation in a single layer with a smooth consistency that was slightly thin, but it adhered evenly to bare skin and blended out easily. The only issue I had was that I felt like it lost some of its brightness once applied. This shade wore well for eight hours before fading noticeably.

Guayaquil

Guayaquil is a rich bronze with moderate, warm undertones and a pearly sheen. The eyeshadow was richly pigmented with a smooth, lightly creamy texture that was firm without being too firmly pressed into the pan that it became stiff to work with. It blended out easily and had a “melted” look to it on my lid. It lasted well for eight and a half hours before I noticed fading.
