Pat McGrath Golden Opulence MTHRSHP Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches

Golden Opulence

Pat McGrath Golden Opulence MTHRSHP Eyeshadow Palette ($65.00 for 0.42 oz.) is a new, limited edition palette that launches on January 2nd on the brand’s website. It will also be available at Sephora (unsure of exact date) per the brand’s replies on Instagram. Those who have more extensive collections featuring the brand’s palette may feel like this is too similar to past releases, though they did not seem to be exact repeats but are certainly similar to some shades released previously. All six shades performed well; they were pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing and were comparable to past releases.

Eternal Opulence

Eternal Opulence is a soft peach with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had excellent color coverage in a single layer with a smooth, finely-milled texture that was more firmly pressed into the pan but was not stiff or difficult to pick up with a brush. It wore well for nine and a half hours before fading slightly.

Formula Overview

$25.00/0.04 oz. - $625.00 Per Ounce

Pat McGrath's eyeshadows are, generally, supposed to be "super-saturated" with "creamy, soft textures" and "extreme blendability and adherence without creasing." A lot of how well they perform (and to some degree, how they are supposed to be applied and marketed) depends on the type of shades, but by and large, the eyeshadows perform very much as they are described.

The brand released single eyeshadows in March 2019, and the shades have been consistent in quality, look, and feel. They are not removable, unfortunately, so one would have to depot like any other single eyeshadow--I tried using tweezers and lifting on several shades to no avail. The lids are held closed by a weak magnet, so I'm not sure they're as secure as most single eyeshadow compacts in my stash--I wish it really locked in, but there's definitely a magnet that pulls the lid down if it's within 2mm of the base.

The mattes are velvety, blendable, and dense without being thick or too heavy, and they have semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation where a little can go a long way with some of the deeper and richer hues. The satin and pearl finishes are smooth, lightly creamy, and firmer but not dense or thick with good pigmentation, blendability, and easy application. The more metallic finishes tend to be softer, creamy, and smooth with a bit more denseness and no powderiness. The sparkly/glittery shades are often designed to be applied wet for richer coverage or intensity, which has largely been my experience. Most of the shades last between eight and nine hours.

Tranquility

Tranquility is a soft, orange-brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow had opaque pigmentation that adhered evenly to bare skin and blended out easily without losing its intensity. The consistency was soft, lightly dusty in the pan, but it didn’t give me trouble with fallout nor did it sheer out too readily. It lasted well for nine hours before I noticed signs of fading.

Lotus Luxe

Lotus Luxe is a brighter, medium red with subtle, warm undertones in its base and cooler pink and warm gold sparkle throughout. The texture was slightly denser and more firmly-pressed into the pan, though after two uses, it seemed slightly softer and more yielding but never seemed difficult to work with (I only sensed that firmness by touch). It had opaque color coverage that applied well to bare skin with a smooth, even lay down of product. It stayed on nicely for nine and a half hours with slight fallout over time.

Prosperity

Prosperity is a deep, red-brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It was intensely pigmented with a soft, lightly powdery texture that was finely-milled and velvety. I didn’t experience fallout during application, but I would recommend tapping off excess and using a lighter hand for those more cautious of over-application as a little went a long way with this shade. The eyeshadow blended out well along the edges and wore well for nine hours before fading a bit.

Moon Phase

Moon Phase is a deep, rosy copper with subtle, warm undertones and a metallic finish. It had an incredibly creamy feel to it that was soft, more yielding but wasn’t prone to fallout; it was one of those textures where it was easy to pick up more product than necessary and could really be pulled and pulled for pigment in a single swipe. I’d recommend using less than you think you need to get to know this shade. It applied well to bare skin and lasted well for nine and a half hours before creasing faintly on me.

Gold Fortune

Gold Fortune is a rich, medium-dark gold with warmer, yellow undertones and a metallic sheen. The consistency was soft, smooth to the touch with a light creaminess that picked up easily with a brush and deposited evenly to bare skin. It had rich color payoff that stayed on nicely for 10 hours before fading a touch.
